From: Paul Debevec Sent: Wednesday, September 29, 2004 1:48 PM To: Darin Grant Subject: Light stage fun Hi Darin, I hope all's going well over at DD. I wanted to report back that last week I drove up to Valencia to do some tests of using BARCO lite panels as Light Stage elements that can produce good eye reflections. The result is that they can - producing fine reflections for a 2K extreme close-up down to 5 feet away. A couple images of one experiment with the Grace Cathedral light probe image are attached. Using the Barco I-10 panels rather than the Dlite-7 would be far preferable due to variance with color angle, but that's what they had set up. I hear that things are looking good for a light stage capture session for Aeon Flux coming up next month - very cool! Were you planning on bringing in HD cameras for this? We can have our in-house cameras set up, but they are only 640x480 and not hi-res enough to really get skin detail. As you know, Sony brought in film cameras for the Spider Man 2 captures, and I think they feel that HD would have been better. Let me know if there's a technical contact we should be in touch with. I heard you had a successful Button test with a Viper camera system and some sort of light dome thing, so if that's anything you can talk about I'd be interested to hear. Also, I'm sure the Vipers would make very good light stage capture cameras if there's ever a way to swing that. Finally, FYI we have a new version of HDR Shop 2 out: http://www.ict.usc.edu/graphics/HDRShop/main-pages/hdrshop2.html which seems to be garnering interest. USC's office of tech licensing will probably be in touch to see if DD would like to sign up again. I asked and they sounded happy to do a cheap site license for DD again like for v1.
